Branford Marsalis Biography
Branford Marsalis (born August 26, 1960) is an American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. He is primarily known for his work in jazz as the leader of the Branford Marsalis Quartet. Marsalis has also performed frequently as a soloist with classical ensembles and led the group Buckshot LeFonque. From 1992 to 1995, he served as the leader of the Tonight Show Band. Born on August 26, 1960, in New Orleans, Marsalis is the son of Dolores, a jazz singer and substitute teacher, and Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr., a pianist and music professor. His brothers Jason, Wynton, and Delfeayo are also jazz musicians. Marsalis graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and attended Southern University, studying under renowned jazz clarinetist Alvin Batiste before transferring to Berklee College.
