Brenda Blethyn (born February 20, 1946) is an English actress known for her versatile performances. She has received various prestigious awards, including a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress, and two Academy Award nominations. After a career in administration, Blethyn decided to pursue acting and enrolled in the Guildford School of Acting. She gained recognition for her roles in stage productions such as Troilus and Cressida, Mysteries, Steaming, and Benefactors, earning an Olivier nomination. Blethyn made her television debut in Mike Leigh's Grown-Ups in 1980 and appeared in sitcoms Chance in a Million and The Labours of Erica. Her breakthrough came in Mike Leigh's 1996 drama Secrets & Lies.
