Carol Elaine Channing (January 31, 1921 – January 15, 2019) was an American actress, comedian, singer, and dancer known for her roles in Broadway and film musicals. She originated the lead roles in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949) and Hello, Dolly! (1964), winning a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for the latter. Channing revived these roles multiple times throughout her career, with her final performance as Dolly in 1995. She received Tony Award nominations for The Vamp (1956), Show Girl (1961), and Lorelei (1974). In film, she won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967).
