Carrie Rachel Brownstein (born September 27, 1974) is an American musician, actress, writer, director, and comedian. She first gained recognition as a member of the band Excuse 17 before co-founding the influential rock trio Sleater-Kinney. Brownstein went on to form the group Wild Flag during a hiatus from Sleater-Kinney. Alongside Fred Armisen, she wrote and starred in the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning TV series Portlandia, based on their comedy sketches. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Brownstein attended Lake Washington High School. In addition to her musical and comedic pursuits, she is also a published author, having released a memoir. Brownstein continues to tour with Sleater-Kinney and promote her latest book.
