    Carter Brown was the literary pseudonym of Alan Geoffrey Yates (1 August 1923 – 5 May 1985), an English-born Australian writer of detective fiction. He published 215 'Carter Brown' novels and around 75 novella-length stories between 1954 and 1984. Born on 1 August 1923 in Ilford, Essex, England, Yates was the only child of Harry Thomas Yates, a railway clerk, and Linda Annie Yates. Before becoming a writer, Yates worked for British Acoustic Films. He also served in the Royal Navy during World War II, participating in operations such as the Normandy landings. Yates married Denise Sinclair MacKellar in 1945.
