Catherine Lamb

Catherine Lamb is an American composer and violist, born in 1982 in Olympia, Washington. She is known for winning the 2020 Ernst von Siemens Composers' Prize. Lamb's music explores the interaction of tone, shapes, and shadows, as well as the architecture of liminal states in between outside and inside. Her works often delve into extended harmonic spaces using just intonation. In an interview with The Wire, Lamb shared her compositional philosophy, emphasizing that the most intense sound does not always need to be the most intensive. She believes in allowing tones to be played in a plain and relaxed manner, giving them room to blossom and become more expressive and generative.
