Christopher John Matthews is an American political commentator, retired talk show host, and author. He is best known for hosting the weeknight hour-long talk show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, which aired on America's Talking and later on MSNBC from 1997 to 2020. Matthews announced his retirement on his final episode after an accusation of inappropriate comments to a Hardball guest. Born on December 17, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Matthews is the son of Mary Teresa and Herb Matthews. Raised in a Catholic family, he has English, Scots-Irish, and Irish ancestry. Matthews has contributed greatly to the field of political commentary and media.
