Cicely Tyson (1924-2021) was an American actress known for her portrayal of strong African-American women. She received various awards including three Emmy Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Tony Award, an Honorary Academy Award, and a Peabody Award. Tyson gained attention and critical acclaim for her performance in Sounder (1972), earning nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Her portrayal of the title role in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974) won her two Emmy Awards. Tyson also received an Emmy nomination for her role in Roots (1977).
