Cotter Smith (born May 29, 1949) is an American stage, film, and television actor hailing from Washington, D.C. He is the son of Madeline and John Lewis Smith Jr., a federal judge. Smith graduated from the Lawrenceville School in 1968, and later received his Bachelor of Arts degree in literature from Trinity College in 1972. Despite his family's legal background, Smith pursued his passion for acting, studying under Stella Adler and at the Actors Studio in New York City. He has an impressive list of New York theater credits, including the Broadway premieres of Next Fall, An American Daughter, and Burn This. Smith has also appeared in numerous films and television shows.
