Daniel Gillespie Clowes (born April 14, 1961) is an American cartoonist, graphic novelist, illustrator, and screenwriter. He gained prominence through his work in Eightball, a solo anthology comic book series. Clowes's work often consists of short pieces and longer narratives that are later compiled into graphic novels such as Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron (1993), Ghost World (1997), David Boring (2000), and Patience (2016). His illustrations have appeared in publications like The New Yorker, Newsweek, Vogue, and The Village Voice. Working with filmmaker Terry Zwigoff, Clowes adapted his comics into films such as Ghost World (2001) and Art School Confidential (2006). Clowes has received numerous awards including a Pen Award, Harvey and Eisner Awards, and an Academy Award nomination.
