Daniel Edwin Carey (born May 10, 1961) is an American musician and songwriter. He is best known as the drummer for the American rock band Tool. Carey has made significant contributions to albums by various artists including Zaum, Green Jellö, Pigface, Skinny Puppy, Adrian Belew, Carole King, Collide, Meat Puppets, Lusk, and the Melvins. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him as one of the 100 greatest drummers of all time, placing him at the 26th position. Born in Lawrence, Kansas, Carey started playing drums at the age of ten and later joined the school band. He further honed his skills in jazz, which greatly influenced his distinct drumming style in a rock setting.
