Darren McGavin (May 7, 1922 – February 25, 2006) was an American actor. He began his career as a set painter for Columbia Pictures and later appeared in Broadway productions such as My Three Angels and The Rainmaker. McGavin had notable roles in films like David Lean's Summertime and Otto Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm. On television, he portrayed the title character in Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, and starred in Riverboat and Kolchak: The Night Stalker. McGavin received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his recurring role on the sitcom Murphy Brown. His film credits include A Christmas Story, Billy Madison, and The Natural.
