After spending much of his early life in reform schools and prisons, Coe took up music and gained recognition by busking in Nashville. Initially playing in the blues style, he later transitioned to country music and produced several notable hits, including 'You Never Even Called Me by My Name', 'Longhaired Redneck', 'The Ride', 'Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile', and 'She Used to Love Me a Lot'.
