David Dinkins Biography
David Norman Dinkins (July 10, 1927 – November 23, 2020) was an American politician, lawyer, and author. He served as the 106th mayor of New York City from 1990 to 1993, becoming the first African American to hold the office. Prior to his mayoralty, Dinkins served in various political roles, including as a member of the New York State Assembly and as Manhattan borough president. He was a graduate of Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. Dinkins was also a proud veteran, having served as one of the first African-American U.S. Marines. After his term as mayor, he joined the faculty of Columbia University while remaining involved in municipal politics.
