David Wayne (born Wayne James McMeekan, January 30, 1914 – February 9, 1995) was an American stage and screen actor with a career spanning over 50 years. He was born in Traverse City, Michigan and grew up in Bloomingdale. Wayne attended Western Michigan University before starting his acting career with Cleveland's Shakespearean repertory theatre in 1936. During World War II, he served as an ambulance driver for the British Army and later joined the United States Army. Wayne's breakthrough came with his role as Og the leprechaun in the Broadway play Finian's Rainbow, earning him the Theatre World Award and the first-ever Tony for Actor, Supporting or Featured (Musical).
