Deacon Phillippe, born Charles Louis Phillippe, was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Louisville Colonels and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was born on May 23, 1872, in Rural Retreat, Virginia, to parents Andrew Phillippe and Jane Margaret Hackler. Phillippe began his professional baseball career with the Louisville Colonels in 1899, where he had a 21-17 record in his rookie season, including a no-hitter. When the Colonels disbanded, he was transferred to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he had a successful career, winning 20 games for four consecutive seasons. Phillippe was known for his pitching skills and contributed to the Pirates' three straight National League pennants.
