Debbie Allen, born on January 16, 1950, is an accomplished American actress, dancer, choreographer, singer-songwriter, director, producer, and former member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. She has received numerous accolades, including 20 Emmy Award nominations, of which she has won five. Additionally, Allen has been nominated twice for Tony Awards and has won a Golden Globe Award. In 1991, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Allen is best known for her role as dance teacher Lydia Grant in the musical-drama television series Fame (1982–1987) and for her work as a director and producer on the NBC comedy series A Different World (1988–1993).
