Dennis Kelly is a British writer and producer known for his work in theatre, television, and film. His play DNA, first performed in 2007, became a popular set-text for GCSE exams and has been studied by around 400,000 students annually. Kelly gained further recognition for his book for Matilda the Musical, which won multiple awards and earned him a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical. He co-created and co-wrote the sitcom Pulling and the conspiracy thriller Utopia. Additionally, he wrote the screenplay for the film Black Sea. Kelly's upbringing on a council estate in Barnet, North London, influenced his perspective as a writer. He attended Finchley Catholic High School.
