Dick Schaap Biography
Dick Schaap (September 27, 1934 – December 21, 2001) was an American sportswriter, broadcaster, and author. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Freeport, New York, Schaap started his career as a sports columnist at the age of 14. He worked for newspapers such as The Nassau Daily Review-Star, Long Island Press, and New York Herald Tribune. Schaap attended Cornell University, where he served as editor-in-chief of The Cornell Daily Sun and played varsity lacrosse. After graduating, he received a Grantland Rice fellowship at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Schaap eventually joined Newsweek as an assistant sports editor. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to sports journalism through his writing, broadcasting, and authorship of books.
