Dixie Virginia Carter (May 25, 1939 – April 10, 2010) was an American actress known for her roles on both stage and television. She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Julia Sugarbaker on the sitcom Designing Women (1986–1993). Carter also starred as Randi King on the drama series Family Law (1999–2002) and received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her guest role as Gloria Hodge on Desperate Housewives (2006–2007). Her career began in the theater, making her professional stage debut in a Memphis production of Carousel in 1960 and later appearing on Broadway in shows like Sextet, Pal Joey, Master Class, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Carter's television credits also include On Our Own, Filthy Rich, and Diff'rent Strokes.
