Douglas Turner Ward Biography
Douglas Turner Ward (May 5, 1930 - February 20, 2021) was an American playwright, actor, director, and theatrical producer. He was born as Roosevelt Ward Jr. in Burnside, Louisiana to poor farmers Roosevelt Ward and Dorothy Short, who also owned a tailoring business. Ward relocated to New Orleans at the age of eight and attended Xavier University Preparatory School. He later enrolled at Wilberforce University and then transferred to the University of Michigan, where he majored in politics and theater before dropping out at 19. Ward moved to New York City where he became friends with Lorraine Hansberry and Lonne Elder III. He went on to co-found the Negro Ensemble Company (NEC) and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 1974 for his role in The River Niger, which he also directed.
