Edward Kirk Herrmann (July 21, 1943 – December 31, 2014) was an American actor, director, and writer. He gained recognition for his portrayals of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the miniseries Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and the film musical Annie (1982). Herrmann is best known for his role as Richard Gilmore in the comedy-drama series Gilmore Girls (2000–2007). He was also a prominent narrator for historical programs on The History Channel and PBS productions like Nova. In addition, Herrmann served as a spokesman for Dodge automobiles in the 1990s. He had a successful career in theater, receiving Tony Award nominations and winning for his performance in Mrs. Warren's Profession (1976). Herrmann also received Primetime Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his work in The Practice and Nixon respectively.
