She rose to prominence in April 2016 when she was appointed as the editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, becoming the second person of African-American heritage to hold such a title in Condé Nast's history. At the age of 29, Welteroth became the second youngest editor in Condé Nast history. Prior to her role as editor-in-chief, she served as Teen Vogue's beauty director, also marking the first time a person of African-American heritage held that position. During her tenure, Welteroth played a pivotal role in increasing Teen Vogue's coverage of politics and social justice, inspiring readers to engage in civic matters, particularly during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
