Elizabeth Bowen CBE (7 June 1899 – 22 February 1973) was an Irish-British novelist and short story writer known for her books depicting the lives of Irish landed Protestants and her wartime London fiction. Born on 7 June 1899 in Dublin, Ireland, to parents Henry Charles Cole Bowen and Florence Isabella Pomeroy, Bowen was brought up at the family estate, Bowen's Court in County Cork. She had a notable circle of childhood friends, including artists and writers. Bowen's writing career began in the 1920s, and she went on to publish numerous novels and short stories. Her works often explore themes of love, loss, and the complexities of human relationships.
