Elizabeth Hess (born July 17, 1953) is a Canadian-American actress, playwright, director, and arts educator. She is best known for her role as Janet Darling, the mother, on the long-running sitcom Clarissa Explains It All. Hess has appeared in several episodes of the popular TV series Law & Order. Her diverse acting career includes performances on Broadway, regional theater, TV, independent films, and award-winning solo works that have toured internationally. Notable among her stage credits is her portrayal of Renee in the Tony Award-winning production of M. Butterfly. Hess received her training from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and studied privately with renowned acting coach Harold Guskin. She has taught acting at prestigious institutions such as New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Fordham University, and the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center/National Theater Institute.
