Elliott Smith (August 6, 1969 – October 21, 2003) was an American musician and singer-songwriter. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised in Texas, and lived in Portland, Oregon. Smith was known for his distinctive vocal style and his ability to play multiple instruments, including guitar, piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. After being a member of the rock band Heatmiser, he began his solo career in 1994. Smith gained mainstream recognition when his song 'Miss Misery' was nominated for an Academy Award after being featured in the film Good Will Hunting. Throughout his career, he released albums on independent labels like Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars, as well as on DreamWorks Records.
