Erica Jong (born March 26, 1942) is an American novelist, satirist, and poet. She gained widespread fame for her 1973 novel Fear of Flying, which became controversial due to its exploration of female sexuality and its impact on second-wave feminism. Born to Seymour Mann, a businessman of Polish Jewish descent, and Eda Mirsky, a painter and textile designer of Russian Jewish heritage, Jong grew up in a creative environment. Her father owned a gifts and home accessories company known for its porcelain dolls. With over 20 million copies sold worldwide, Fear of Flying remains one of Jong's most successful works.
