Ernesto Federico Alterio Bacaicoa (born 25 September 1970) is an Argentine-Spanish actor known for his work in film, theatre, and television. He is the son of psychologist Modesta Ángela Bacaicoa Destéfano and actor Héctor Alterio Onorato, and his younger sister Malena is also an actress. Alterio is of Italian descent, with his grandparents originally from Carpinone, Italy. After the coup in Argentina, his family went into exile and settled in Spain, where he later obtained Spanish nationality. Alterio began his studies in Biology but switched to History, which he pursued for two years before pursuing a career in acting.
