Frank O'Connor
Frank O'Connor (1903-1966) was an Irish author and translator known for his contributions to poetry, dramatic works, memoirs, journalistic columns, criticism, fiction, biography, and travel books. Born as Michael Francis O'Donovan, he grew up in Cork and attended Saint Patrick's School and North Monastery Christian Brothers School. O'Connor's interest in the Irish language and poetry was sparked by his teacher Daniel Corkery. His writing career was prolific, with over 150 short stories and notable memoirs. Despite a difficult childhood marked by his father's alcoholism and ill-treatment of his mother, O'Connor's literary achievements and influence on Irish culture were significant. The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award is named in his honor.
