Fred Schneider, born Frederick William Schneider III on July 1, 1951, is an American singer and founding member of the rock band the B-52's. Known for his unique sprechgesang style, Schneider developed his distinctive spoken-sung vocals by reciting poetry over guitars. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Schneider later moved to Oceanport after living in Belleville. His musical influences include Halloween songs, nutty Christmas songs, and Motown. After graduating from Shore Regional High School, Schneider attended the University of Georgia, where he wrote a book of poetry for a class project. Prior to the formation of the B-52's, Schneider had minimal musical experience, working as a janitor and Meals on Wheels driver. The B-52's began in 1976 with an impromptu performance after drinking at a Chinese restaurant.
