Garry Kent Marshall (November 13, 1934 – July 19, 2016) was an American screenwriter, film director, producer, and actor. He began his career in the 1960s as a writer for The Lucy Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show. Marshall gained recognition for creating the popular ABC sitcom Happy Days in the 1970s. He directed numerous successful films, including The Flamingo Kid, Overboard, Beaches, Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, and The Princess Diaries. Additionally, he directed romantic comedy ensemble films like Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve, and Mother's Day. Born in the Bronx, New York City, Marshall was the brother of actress-director Penny Marshall and Ronny Marshall Hallin.
