Garry Emmanuel Shandling (November 29, 1949 – March 24, 2016) was an American actor, comedian, writer, director, and producer. He gained recognition in the entertainment industry as a writer for sitcoms such as Sanford and Son and Welcome Back, Kotter. Shandling's stand-up performance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson elevated his popularity, and he became a frequent guest host. He created and starred in two successful television shows: It's Garry Shandling's Show, which aired on Showtime from 1986 to 1990 and received four Emmy nominations, and The Larry Sanders Show, which aired on HBO from 1992 to 1998 and earned him 18 Emmy nominations, winning one. Shandling also had notable appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
