George P. Pelecanos is an American author, film and television producer, and television writer. Born on February 18, 1957, in Washington, D.C., Pelecanos is known for his detective fiction novels set primarily in his hometown. He has written 20 books in this genre and has acknowledged Elmore Leonard, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, John D. MacDonald, Ross Macdonald, Mickey Spillane, and John le Carré as influences on his work. Pelecanos has collaborated with David Simon on multiple projects, including writing episodes for HBO series such as The Wire, Treme, The Deuce, and We Own This City. He is a Greek American and his early novels featured the first-person voice of Nick Stefanos, a Greek D.C. resident and private investigator.
