George Wakeman
Sir George Wakeman (died 1688) was an English doctor who served as the royal physician to Catherine of Braganza, Consort of Charles II of England. He was falsely accused of treason in 1678 during the fabricated Popish Plot, where Titus Oates accused him of conspiring to kill the King and put James, Duke of York on the throne. Wakeman was acquitted at his trial in 1679, which marked a turning point in public faith towards the reality of the Plot. He was the son of Edward Wakeman and Mary Cotton, raised as a Roman Catholic, and likely received his medical education in Paris.
