George Corley Wallace Jr. (August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998) was an American politician who served as the 45th governor of Alabama for four terms. Known for his staunch segregationist and populist views, Wallace promoted industrial development, low taxes, and trade schools during his time as governor. He ran for the United States presidency three times as a Democratic Party candidate and one time as an American Independent Party candidate, but was unsuccessful in each attempt. Wallace opposed desegregation and supported the policies of Jim Crow during the Civil Rights Movement. Born in Clio, Alabama, he attended the University of Alabama School of Law and served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II.
