    Hakeem Sekou Jeffries is an American politician and attorney. Born on August 4, 1970, he has been serving as the Leader of the House Democratic Caucus and House Minority Leader since 2023. Jeffries has been representing New York's 8th congressional district since 2013, making him a six-term U.S. representative. Prior to his congressional career, he served three terms in the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2012. Jeffries made history as the first African American to lead a party caucus in either chamber of the United States Congress when he was unanimously elected to his leadership role in November 2022. He was also the Democratic nominee for Speaker of the House in the 118th Congress, with unanimous support from his caucus.
