Hal Linden (born Harold Lipshitz, March 20, 1931) is an American stage and screen actor, television director, and musician. He began his career in the 1950s as a big band musician and singer before transitioning into acting. Linden gained recognition on Broadway, notably for his role in the musical Bells Are Ringing and his Tony Award-winning performance in The Rothschilds. In 1974, he became widely known for his portrayal of the title character in the television comedy series Barney Miller, earning him numerous awards and nominations.
