Hugo Magnuson Biography
Hugo Magnuson (May 23, 1900 – May 20, 2003) was an American businessman and politician. He is best known as the founder of the regional Hugo's grocery store chain. Magnuson served as the mayor of Grand Forks, North Dakota, from 1964 to 1972 and was a city council member for seventeen years. Born in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, he was the sixth child of Carl Victor Magnuson and Mary Sjobeck Magnuson. Magnuson's grocery stores, initially named Pure Foods Store, later carried the name Piggly Wiggly until 1984 when a new wholesaler, Nash Finch Company, arrived. He was married to Dorothy Magnuson and they had four children. Hugo's stores are located in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
