Isaac Lee Hayes Jr. (August 20, 1942 – August 10, 2008) was an American singer, songwriter, actor, and composer. He was a creative force behind the Southern soul music label Stax Records, serving as an in-house songwriter, session musician, and record producer. Alongside his partner David Porter, Hayes wrote numerous songs for himself, the duo Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, and others. Hayes and Porter were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2002, Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is best known for co-writing and performing the influential song 'Soul Man' with Porter. Hayes had a successful career as a recording artist, actor, and composer throughout the late 1960s and beyond.
