She gained recognition for her roles in the TV series Rectify (2013–2016) and Succession (2018–2023), earning two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Smith-Cameron made her Broadway debut in 1982 in Crimes of the Heart and received a Tony Award nomination for Our Country's Good (1989). She was also nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Juno and the Paycock (2014). In film, she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her role in Nancy (2018) and has appeared in movies like 84 Charing Cross Road (1987), Mighty Aphrodite (1995), and Christine (2016).
