Jack Atkins
Jack Atkins, born Ernest John Atkins on December 19, 1916, was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was the son of former University footballer, Ernest Faram 'Ernie' Atkins. Jack Atkins served as an able seaman on HMAS Perth during World War II. Tragically, he lost his life during the Battle of Sunda Strait when HMAS Perth was hit by a Japanese torpedo. Jack Atkins' service number was PM2929. His courageous sacrifice is remembered alongside other Victorian Football League players who died in active service.
