James McDaniel Jr. (born March 25, 1958) is an American stage, film, and television actor. He is best known for his role as Lt. Arthur Fancy on the television show NYPD Blue. McDaniel also played a police officer in the series Cop Rock and portrayed a close advisor to director Spike Lee regarding Malcolm X in the 1992 film. Additionally, he played Sgt. Jesse Longford in the ABC television series Detroit 1-8-7. McDaniel was born on March 25, 1958, in Washington, D.C., and attended the University of Pennsylvania before deciding to pursue acting. He started his career in commercials and later transitioned to stage acting.
