Janet Carroll (December 24, 1940 – May 22, 2012) was an American film, stage, and television character actress. With a career spanning over four decades, Carroll appeared in major and supporting roles in Broadway musicals, television shows, and Hollywood films. She is best known for her portrayal of Joel's oblivious mother in the 1983 film Risky Business, starring Tom Cruise. Born Janet Carol Thiese in Chicago, Carroll received formal theatrical training and began acting professionally in the late 1960s. She had a fluent 3 1⁄2-octave vocal range and was known for her versatile performances. Janet Carroll passed away on May 22, 2012.
