Jared Schutz Polis (born May 12, 1975) is an American politician, businessman, and philanthropist. He currently serves as the 43rd governor of Colorado since 2019. Prior to becoming governor, Polis served one term on the Colorado State Board of Education from 2001 to 2007, and five terms as the United States representative from Colorado's 2nd congressional district from 2009 to 2019. Known for his libertarian Democratic views, Polis was the only Democratic member of the Liberty Caucus. Throughout his political career, he has achieved several historic milestones. In 2008, he became the first non-incumbent openly gay man elected to Congress, and in 2018, he made history as the first openly gay man and second openly LGBT person elected governor of a U.S. state. Additionally, Polis is the first Jewish person to be elected governor of Colorado and the first U.S. governor in a same-sex marriage.
