    Jean Grae, born Tsidi Ibrahim on November 26, 1976, is an American rapper. She gained prominence in the underground hip hop scene in New York City and has since garnered a global following. Grae's distinctive music and lyrical style have earned her recognition as a favored emcee by notable rap artists like Talib Kweli, Jay-Z, and Black Thought of the Roots. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, she was raised in New York City after her family relocated there. Grae attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, studying Vocal Performance, and briefly studied Music Business at New York University. In 1995, she was discovered by George Rithm Martinez and gained attention with a demo in his group Ground Zero.
