Her father worked as a joiner and fitter while her mother's occupation is unknown. Coleman has an older brother named Ben who is also a joiner. She attended Arnold School in Blackpool and later pursued a career in acting. Coleman gained recognition for playing Jasmine Thomas in the soap opera Emmerdale, Clara Oswald in Doctor Who, Queen Victoria in Victoria, and Joanna Lindsay in The Cry. She has also appeared in films such as Captain America: The First Avenger and Me Before You. In 2022, she portrayed Johanna Constantine in the Netflix series The Sandman.
