Jerry Lewis (born Joseph Levitch; March 16, 1926 – August 20, 2017) was an American comedian, actor, singer, filmmaker, and humanitarian. He rose to fame as one-half of the popular duo Martin and Lewis, alongside singer Dean Martin. Considered the highest-paid movie star of the 1950s and 1960s, Lewis appeared in 118 film and television productions throughout his career. He was an early adopter of video assist technology, which allowed real-time review of scenes on camera. Later in life, Lewis focused on muscular dystrophy activism, serving as national chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) since 1956. He received numerous accolades, including the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
