Jester Joseph Hairston (July 9, 1901 – January 18, 2000) was an American composer, songwriter, arranger, choral conductor, and actor. Known for his expertise in black spirituals and choral music, Hairston composed notable songs such as 'Amen,' featured in the film 'Lilies of the Field' and performed by the Impressions, and the Christmas song 'Mary's Boy Child.' Born in Belews Creek, North Carolina, Hairston moved to Homestead, Pennsylvania, after his father's death, where he graduated from high school in 1921. Inspired by his grandmother and her friends, Hairston dedicated his life to preserving the history of plantation life through music.
