James Norman Beaver Jr. (born August 12, 1950) is an American actor, writer, and film historian. He is widely recognized for his role as Bobby Singer in the television series Supernatural. Beaver gained critical acclaim for his portrayal of Whitney Ellsworth on the HBO Western drama series Deadwood, earning him a nomination for Ensemble Acting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. He also appeared as Sheriff Shelby Parlow on the FX series Justified. In addition to his acting career, Beaver is a published author, with his memoir Life's That Way released in 2009. Born in Laramie, Wyoming, Beaver comes from a diverse heritage, including English, French, Cherokee, German, and Scottish ancestry.
