Phoenix started his career appearing in television series in the 1980s with his brother River. He gained recognition for his roles in SpaceCamp (1986) and Parenthood (1989). Phoenix garnered critical acclaim for his supporting roles in To Die For (1995) and Quills (2000), and received an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Commodus in Gladiator (2000).
